What time do bars close in Bangkok? For most licensed venues the answer is 2:00, but some areas can stay open until 4:00, some bars must stop at midnight, and the rules on buying alcohol changed again in 2026. Add ID checks, dress codes and the fact that the trains stop around midnight, and a little planning makes a big difference to a night out.

This is our practical guide to Bangkok nightlife rules in 2026: closing times, alcohol laws, ID, dress, transport, safety, tipping and prices. For where to go, see the Bangkok nightlife guide. For what's on, see tonight's events.

Last checked: October 2026. Rules are enforced unevenly and can change at short notice; if in doubt, ask the venue.

Closing times

Bangkok's closing times depend on a venue's licence and location.

Venue type Usual closing time
Bars and restaurants without an entertainment licence Around midnight
Licensed entertainment venues (bars, clubs) 2:00
Licensed venues inside a designated zone, with an extended-hours permit 4:00
Licensed entertainment venues inside hotels Up to 4:00

The 4am zones

Since December 2023, licensed venues in designated zones can stay open until 4:00. In Bangkok these are:

  • Silom, including Patpong
  • Phetchaburi Road, which covers the RCA (Royal City Avenue) club strip
  • Ratchadaphisek Road

Being inside a zone isn't enough on its own: the venue needs the right licence and permit, and many bars in these areas still close at 2:00. Thonglor, Ekkamai and Khao San Road are not 4am zones. On Khao San, only a handful of venues hold the licences to open late; most close by midnight to 2:00.

The government studied a nationwide 4am closing in late 2025, but as of October 2026 the zone system remains in place. Venues that stay open late must also follow rules on serving: no sales to anyone under 20 or visibly drunk.

Why a bar might close early

Police checks, licence problems, special days (below) and, for outdoor bars, rain. If a venue closes abruptly, there's usually little you can do but move on.

Buying alcohol: hours and banned days

  • Shops and supermarkets (including 7-Eleven) can sell alcohol from 11:00 to midnight. The old afternoon ban (14:00 to 17:00) was dropped permanently by a notice published in the Royal Gazette in late May 2026, after a trial from December 2025.
  • Licensed entertainment venues and hotels follow their own licence hours.
  • No-alcohol days: sales are banned on major Buddhist holy days (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asahna Bucha, Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa) and on election days, usually from the evening before. Many bars close; some hotel venues serve only to guests. Check the date before planning a big night.
  • Age: you must be 20 to buy or drink alcohol.

ID and age checks

  • Clubs and many bars check ID at the door. Carry your passport. Some venues accept a copy or a driving licence; some insist on the original, especially clubs.
  • Police occasionally check ID in nightlife areas. Carrying your passport, or at least a clear copy with your visa stamp, is wise.
  • At rooftop bars, ID checks often happen at the lift.

Dress codes

  • Hotel rooftops and smart bars: smart casual. Men should wear long trousers and closed shoes and skip vests and sleeveless tops. Sky Bar at lebua is the strictest.
  • Clubs: smart casual at Sing Sing Theater and the big RCA clubs; flip-flops and shorts are often refused.
  • Techno nights, pubs, Khao San: relaxed. Anything tidy works.
  • Temples and the Grand Palace have separate dress rules if you're sightseeing before a night out.

Smoking, vaping and drugs

  • Smoking is banned indoors in bars and clubs. Many venues have a smoking area outside.
  • E-cigarettes and vapes are illegal in Thailand. Possession can lead to fines or arrest, and police do enforce it, including against tourists. Leave them at home.
  • Drugs: penalties for illegal drugs are severe. Cannabis rules were tightened in 2025, and recreational use is not permitted; don't assume older articles about "legal weed" still apply.

Getting home

BTS and MRT

The BTS Skytrain and MRT run from around 6:00 to about midnight. Last trains from central stations leave roughly between 23:30 and 00:15, depending on the line and direction. Check the BTS and MRT apps or the times posted at each station. There are extended services on special nights such as New Year's Eve.

Grab and Bolt

Ride-hailing is the easiest way home. Grab and Bolt both work in Bangkok, show a fixed price in advance and let you share your trip. Prices rise late at night and when it rains. After a 4:00 finish at RCA, expect a wait.

Taxis

Metered taxis are plentiful. Insist on the meter ("meter, please"), and if a driver quotes a flat price, find another taxi. Drivers waiting outside nightlife strips are most likely to refuse the meter, so walk a block away first.

Motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks

Motorbike taxi riders in numbered orange vests wait at soi corners and are good for short hops, though not ideal after a lot of drinks. Tuk-tuks are fun but agree the price first, and turn down any driver offering a cheap "tour" with stops.

Staying safe

Bangkok is generally safe for a night out, but a few problems come up again and again:

  • Show touts around Patpong and parts of Sukhumvit lead to bars with inflated bills. Ignore them.
  • Check the bill. In any bar, especially go-go bars, check drink prices before ordering and pay as you go if you can.
  • Watch your drink. Spiking is uncommon but does happen. Don't leave drinks unattended.
  • Keep valuables close in crowds at Khao San, RCA and the night markets.
  • Fights: walk away from arguments. Nightlife disputes with locals or staff can escalate quickly.
  • Emergency numbers: Tourist Police 1155 (English spoken), police 191, ambulance 1669.

Tipping

Tipping isn't compulsory in Bangkok, but it's appreciated.

  • Hotel bars and smart restaurants usually add a 10% service charge, plus 7% VAT. This is what "++" means on a menu. No extra tip is needed.
  • Bars without a service charge: leaving small change or rounding up (20 to 100 THB) is common.
  • Taxis: round up to the nearest 10 or 20 THB.
  • Musicians: a tip jar or a drink for the band is a nice gesture.

What things cost

Prices vary hugely by area. These are rough ranges in 2026; always check the menu.

Item Typical price
Beer at a street bar or market 60 to 120 THB
Beer in a bar 150 to 300 THB
Cocktail at a good bar 350 to 650 THB, plus service and VAT
Cocktail at a famous rooftop 450 THB to well over 1,000 THB
Club entry Free to around 500 THB, often with a drink
Grab ride home within central Bangkok Often 100 to 400 THB, more late or in rain

A simple checklist

  1. Check if it's a no-alcohol day.
  2. Pack your passport (or a copy, plus the original for clubs).
  3. Dress for the dress code.
  4. Note when your last train leaves.
  5. Have Grab or Bolt set up with a payment method.
  6. Leave vapes at home.
