A great date night in Bangkok almost always involves the river. Wat Arun lit up gold across the water, a long dinner on a teak rice barge, a cocktail 30 floors above the city with the lights coming on: Bangkok is very good at romance, provided you plan around the traffic and the weather.

Below are the best date night ideas in Bangkok for 2026, from splashy to low-key, with rough costs and the practical bits (booking, dress, getting there). For special evenings with dates, such as concerts, Valentine's dinners and seasonal events, see this weekend's events and the calendar.

Last checked: October 2026. Cruise prices and piers change; confirm with the operator when booking.

Dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya

A river cruise is the classic Bangkok date, and there are two very different kinds.

Big buffet cruises

Several large boats leave ICONSIAM and Asiatique piers every evening, usually departing around 19:30 to 20:15 for about two hours. They pass the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the Rama VIII Bridge with a buffet, a live singer and sometimes a dance floor. Operators include White Orchid, the Chao Phraya Princess boats, Royal Princess, Luxury White and Opulence.

  • Price: recent operator prices range from roughly 800 THB to about 1,800 THB per adult, depending on the boat and whether drinks are included. Third-party booking sites often discount them.
  • Good for: a fun, easy evening. Not intimate: these boats carry hundreds of passengers.
  • Tip: check the pier carefully. The Chao Phraya Princess Indian buffet boat, for example, moved to Charoennakorn Soi 61 pier in July 2026.

Small rice-barge cruises

For something quieter, Manohra Cruises runs dinner trips on restored teak rice barges from the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, with a Thai set dinner and far fewer guests. A two-hour sunset dining cruise was recently listed from around 4,000 THB. This is the romantic option. Book ahead and allow time for the hotel shuttle boat from Sathorn pier.

Rooftops for two

Bangkok has dozens of rooftop bars, but not all of them suit a date. The famous ones are crowded at sunset. For two, pick somewhere you can sit:

  • The Speakeasy at Hotel Muse, Langsuan: 1920s styling, sofas and a cigar lounge, with cocktails around 460 to 520 THB. Smart casual.
  • Penthouse Bar + Grill at the Park Hyatt, by BTS Phloen Chit: moodier, partly indoor, good in the rainy season.
  • Eagle Nest at Sala Rattanakosin: small and casual, with a direct view of Wat Arun across the river. Walk-in only, so arrive by about 17:00 for a rail seat.
  • Bar.Yard at the Kimpton Maa-Lai: relaxed, green and less of a scene than the famous rooftops.
  • Sky Bar at lebua: the famous one. Expensive and busy, but if your date has always wanted to see it, go at sunset and have one drink.

Note that Vertigo and Moon Bar at Banyan Tree, a long-time date favourite, is closed for renovation until 2 December 2026. More options in our best rooftop bars guide.

Jazz and cocktails

A jazz bar is an easy, unhurried date, and it gives you something to talk about.

  • The Bamboo Bar at the Mandarin Oriental has a resident band and vocalist Monday to Saturday from around 20:00. Dress smart and arrive early at weekends.
  • Crimson Room on Lang Suan is a theatrical supper club with jazz every evening.
  • Smalls on Suan Phlu is the low-key choice, with soft jazz most nights (closed Tuesdays).

For cocktails, small bars like Lennon's at the Rosewood (a vinyl-lined room 30 floors up) or Bar Sathorn in a 19th-century mansion at W Bangkok work well for two. Book. See our jazz bars guide and cocktail bars guide.

Shows

  • Calypso Cabaret at Asiatique is Bangkok's best-known ladyboy cabaret: glamorous costumes, lip-synced numbers and comedy. Recent listings show shows nightly at around 19:15, with a second show at around 21:00 on many nights. Combine it with a stroll along the Asiatique riverfront.
  • Khon (Thai masked dance drama) is performed at Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre in the old town, with recent listings showing afternoon performances on selected dates. Check the schedule before you go.
  • Muay Thai might not sound romantic, but a fight night at Rajadamnern Stadium is a memorable shared experience. See our Muay Thai guide.
  • Concerts and theatre: touring musicals, orchestras and big concerts play at venues across the city. Check concert listings.

Riverside evenings without a cruise

  • ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank has riverside terraces and restaurants with views back across the water. The free shuttle boats between Sathorn pier and ICONSIAM make it an easy evening.
  • Asiatique has riverside restaurants and its Ferris wheel, which gives a slow loop over the river.
  • Talat Noi and Charoen Krung: dinner in the old riverside quarter, then a drink at a small bar or a set at Foojohn Jazz Club.

Low-budget date ideas

A good date doesn't need a 5,000 THB bill:

  • Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat at sunset for the river views at commuter prices, then walk to dinner.
  • Eat your way along Yaowarat in Chinatown, sharing dishes from different stalls, then find a quiet bar nearby.
  • Wander the Train Night Market Ratchada, which reopened in March 2026, for street food and live bands. See our night markets guide.
  • Catch a free concert or outdoor screening in a park during the cool season. Our free things to do in Bangkok guide and the calendar list them.

Practical tips

  • Book the important part. Cruises, small cocktail bars and rooftop tables at sunset should be booked, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and around Valentine's Day.
  • Leave time for traffic. Crossing the city at 18:00 can take an hour. Use the BTS, MRT or river boats where you can.
  • Dress up a little. Hotel bars and cruises expect smart casual; men should wear long trousers and closed shoes.
  • Have a rain plan. In the rainy season (roughly May to October), pick places with indoor seating.
  • Service charge: hotel bills add 10% service and 7% VAT, shown as "++".
