Thonglor nightlife is Bangkok at its most polished. Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thong Lo) and its neighbour Soi 63 (Ekkamai) are lined with cocktail bars, Japanese izakaya, rooftop lounges and small music rooms, and they draw a well-dressed crowd of young Thais, expats and visitors. There are no go-go bars and little of the chaos of lower Sukhumvit, just a lot of very good places to drink.

This guide covers how the area works, where to go for cocktails, views, music and a late finish, and what has changed recently. For dated events in the area, see the Thonglor & Ekkamai area page.

Last checked: October 2026. Thonglor venues turn over quickly; check opening hours before you go.

How the area works

Thonglor Road runs roughly 3 km north from BTS Thong Lo on Sukhumvit to Phetchaburi Road. Ekkamai Road runs parallel, starting at BTS Ekkamai. Bars cluster in pockets along both roads and in the numbered sois between them, so walking the whole strip isn't practical, especially in the heat or rain.

Getting around:

  • Motorbike taxis wait at the bottom of both roads and at major soi corners; a short hop costs a small flat fee.
  • Grab and Bolt work well, though Thonglor traffic is notoriously slow in the early evening rush.
  • Walking works within a cluster, for example around the bottom of Thonglor near the BTS or between bars on the same soi.

Closing time: Thonglor is not one of Bangkok's 4am zones, so most bars close at 2:00, and smaller bars without an entertainment licence often stop at midnight. See our guide to closing times and rules.

Start with a view: rooftops

Octave, Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit

Two minutes from BTS Thong Lo on Soi 57, Octave covers the 45th to 49th floors with a 360-degree view. Come for sunset, with cocktails roughly in the 400 to 550 THB range before service and VAT. The lower floor is all-ages; the bar floors above are 20 and over. Book for weekend sunsets.

Tichuca, T-One Building

Technically on Sukhumvit Soi 40, across the main road from Ekkamai, Tichuca's 46th-floor jungle bar with its glowing tree sculpture is one of the city's most photographed rooftops. It doesn't take reservations, so arrive early or expect to queue.

Cocktail bars

Dry Wave Cocktail Studio

Ranked No. 4 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026, the highest in Thailand, Dry Wave is on the second floor of the Sodality building on Thonglor Soi 13. It is a small room, so book, and expect inventive drinks built on Thai ingredients.

Rabbit Hole

On Thonglor Road between Soi 5 and Soi 7, Rabbit Hole is a three-floor cocktail bar behind an unmarked door. It turned ten this year and brought back some of its classic signatures, with drinks from around 440 THB plus service and VAT. One of the most reliable bars in the area.

Iron Balls Distillery

At Park Lane on Ekkamai (Sukhumvit 63), this steampunk-styled bar distils its own gin on site. Gin and tonics and gin cocktails are the obvious order. Hours listed online vary, so check before going.

Short walk from the BTS

If you'd rather stay close to the train, the bottom end of Thonglor and the sois off Sukhumvit Road around BTS Thong Lo have plenty of hotel bars, wine bars and izakaya. For award-winning cocktails a few stations away, Bar Us on Sukhumvit Soi 26 (No. 6 in Asia) is near BTS Phrom Phong.

Live music and DJs

  • Speakerbox on Soi 55 is a small, independent venue for indie, punk, rock and experimental bands, open from about 17:00 to 1:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
  • 12 x 12 in Ekkamai is a tiny, community-run room for house, techno, disco and jazz, open Tuesday to Saturday evenings.
  • Berlin BKK, opened in early 2026 on the fifth floor of the Donki Mall building on Sukhumvit 63, runs hard techno nights on Fridays and Saturdays until close.
  • Sing Sing Theater on Sukhumvit Soi 45, one stop back at Phrom Phong, is the area's most theatrical club: live acts early, DJs late, Tuesday to Saturday.

Eat first, or eat late

Thonglor has one of the city's best concentrations of restaurants, and many stay open late enough to finish the night with food. Japanese izakaya and ramen bars cluster around the lower sois, and street food appears near the BTS after dark. Look for supper spots on the main road; many kitchens take last orders around 23:00 to midnight.

Prices and dress code

Thonglor is one of the pricier parts of Bangkok to drink in, but it varies a lot by venue:

  • Cocktail bars: roughly 400 to 600 THB per drink at the well-known bars, plus 10% service and 7% VAT where a menu shows "++".
  • Rooftops: similar or slightly higher, and some add a minimum spend for the best tables at sunset.
  • Pubs, izakaya and live music rooms: beers from around 150 to 250 THB.
  • Street level: convenience stores and street stalls near the BTS keep a night affordable.

Dress is smart casual almost everywhere. Hotel rooftops and the better cocktail bars expect long trousers and closed shoes for men; flip-flops and vests are often turned away. Music rooms like Speakerbox and 12 x 12 are relaxed. Bring ID: most bars and all clubs are strictly 20 and over.

What has closed

Bangkok guides go out of date fast, and Thonglor more than most:

  • 72 Courtyard, the bar and restaurant complex on Thonglor Road, closed on 31 October 2025, and with it the club BEAM and Feral Wine Bar.
  • Studio Lam on Sukhumvit Soi 51, the home of Thai molam and world music, closed on 28 February 2026 (see our live music venues guide).

If a guide still sends you to either, it hasn't been updated.

A sample night

  1. 18:00 Sunset drinks at Octave, two minutes from BTS Thong Lo.
  2. 19:30 Dinner in one of the izakaya on the lower sois.
  3. 21:30 Motorbike taxi up to Dry Wave (booked) or Rabbit Hole.
  4. 23:00 A gig at Speakerbox, or Iron Balls for a gin nightcap.
  5. Late: Thonglor closes at 2:00. For a longer night, take a taxi to RCA or Silom, both 4am zones.
